Lake Michigan Kiteboarding

Lake Michigan kiteboarding. The kites visually preceded the surfers as I pulled my car into the sand-dusted parking lot at the beach in Frankfort. It's the south/ southwest wind that is optimal here, according to the surfers. If it wasn't for the cold and changing leaves nearby, it could've been Malibu. Malibu would've had far more people though.

Flying Wallenda

Carla Wallenda, of the Flying Wallendas, is 76 and yesterday I was so fortunate to watch her performance at the Frankfort-Elberta Fourth of July Festival. Carla's great nephew, Nik, recently became the first person to cross the Niagra Falls on a high wire. The pole that she climbs is a 110-foot sway pole. What I found extraordinary, aside from her doing a head stand on top of the pole, was what took place when she was done and sat down next to her ice cream stand to meet people and sign autographs. It was amazing to see many kids so impressed by what she did. There were a number of kids with skateboards and hats backwards shaking her hand and saying how "awesome" it was and I remember one saying, "There's no way I'd do that."
